Macramé Owl Wall Hanger

Macramé is a hoot with this beautiful owl wall hanger! Learn the art of knot tying as you combine 3 different knot types to complete your owl.

  • Step 4Take the 2 left cords. Now you will start a Diagonal Clove Hitch across your design. Lay the 1st cord on the left over the top and across to the right of the second cord. The first cord is the filler cord and all other cords will ‘hitch’ onto it. To create the clove hitch, bring the second cord up into a loop over the first cord. Put your thumb and forefinger under the first cord, grabbing hold of the loop and pulling it out to the left. Hold onto the filler cord with your right hand and pull the knot tight.
  • Step 5Use the same method to loop the second cord over the first again and pulling tight. Continue to tie clove hitches across your design in a slight diagonal direction until you reach the middle. All together you will need to hitch 7 cords onto the filler cord.
  • Step 6Starting from the right side this time, use the furthest right hand cord as the filler cord and bring it over and to the left of the other cords. Hitch the next 7 cords onto this using the same method as before until the line of clove hitch knots meets the other in the centre, just below the square knot from step 3.
  • Step 7Take the 4th cord from the left and thread a large bead onto it, pushing it all the way to the top. Take the 4th cord from the right and thread a large bead onto it, pushing it all the way to the top. These beads will be the eyes of the owl.
  • Step 8Separate the cords so there are 4 in the centre and 6 cords on either side. Use the middle 4 cords to tie a square knot.
  • Step 9To create the beak we are going to tie some more diagonal clove hitches! Separate the cords down the middle taking the 8 cords on the left. Using the 5th cord from the left (the cord directly to the right of the bead) as your filler cord, tie 3 clove hitch knots diagonally downwards, using the method you used in step 4.
  • Step 10Repeat this process on the right hand side using the same diagonal clove hitch pattern until it meets in the middle as shown.
  • Step 11Tie a square knot using the centre 4 cords to hold everything in place.
  • Step 12Take the 2nd cord from the left of the square knot you’ve just tied and use it as the filler cord for another row of diagonal clove hitch knots. Place the cord over and to the left of all 7 cords so it sits slightly below the bead. Hitch the 7 cords onto the filler cord and then tie a simple knot at the end to secure.
  • Step 13Create another row of diagonal hitch knots to the right using the same process as you did in step 12.
  • Step 14Take the middle 2 cords and thread a medium sized bead onto one of the cords. Tie the cords together to secure in place. This is the owl’s beak.
  • Step 15Separate the cords down the middle and start with the 8 cords on the left. Use the 4 cords directly left of the beak to tie a square knot. Tie a second square knot with the next 4 cords to the left. Take the outer left and outer right of the 8 cords and tie a third square knot around the centre 6 cords.
  • Step 16Repeat step 15 on the right hand side to tie 2 lots of square knots using 4 cords and then a final 3rd square knot using all 8 cords.
  • Step 1Begin by cutting 8 lengths of macrame cord measuring 120cm each. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Take a piece of dowel and attach the 8 lengths to it using a simple cow hitch knot
  • Step 3Separate the cords as shown so there is a bunch of 8 cords in the middle with 4 cords on either side. Take the outer cords of the 8 middle cords to tie a square knot around the remaining 6 middle cords. Pull tight to secure.
  • Step 17Take the middle 4 cords and tie a square knot. Make sure the first half of the square knot is tied approximately 3cm below the beak. Tie the second half and pull tight to secure.
  • Step 18Separate the cords down the middle and start with the 8 cords on the left. Take the very left cord and use it as your filler cord. Lay it over and to the right of the other 7 cords, positioning it so it will finish approximately 2cm below the square knot you tied in step 17. Begin to tie clove hitch knots until all 7 cords have been attached to the filler cord.
  • Step 19Repeat the process on the right hand side. Using the far right cord as the filler, tie clove hitch knots down it diagonally until all 7 are attached.
  • Step 20Take the ends of the left and right filler cords from steps 18 & 19 and tie them into a knot to secure everything in place.
  • Step 21Cut a piece of cord approximately 80cm long. Gather all the cords of the owl together into a bunch and secure together using a Wrap Knot
  • Step 22Use scissors to trim the ends of the cords.
  • Step 23To make a hanger for your owl, cut 2 pieces of cord approximately 70cm each. Use a cow hitch to tie a piece to each end of the dowel, and then a square knot to join the 4 cords at the top for hanging.
  • Step 24Your Macramé Owl Wall Hanging is now ready to display!
