Step 1Pop a scrunchie over the top of a jar. This will help to spread the fabric out, making for an easier dying process.
Step 2Think about what colours and how many you want to use on the scrunchie – we have chosen to use three. Put on some gloves and add the first colour. Squeeze the dye straight from the bottle onto the fabric then massage it in. Ensure you rub the dye onto the back of the fabric as well. Make your way around the scrunchie adding patches of your first colour until you are happy with the start of your design.
Step 3Clean and dry your gloves before starting on your next colour. Add patches of this colour in the same way you did for the first. Don’t worry if the colours begin to mix a little – this is how you get that great tie dye effect!
Step 4Repeat step 3 for as many colours as your design needs until you reach your final colour. Clean and dry your gloves then add patches of the final colour until the scrunchie is completely covered. Leave the scrunchie on the jar and allow it to air dry completely.
Step 5Remove the scrunchie from the jar - it will be quite stiff! Rinse the scrunchie under cold water to remove any excess dye before squeezing out and laying flat to air dry again. Once dry, you can heat set the dye using an iron, clothes dryer or hairdryer.
You can make as many scrunchies as you like following the steps above. Experiment with different colours and combinations!
Step 6Download and print the template provided. We recommend printing onto cardboard as this will make a sturdy card for your scrunchies. Decorate your chosen template design with your favourite materials and allow to dry if needed. Carefully cut out around the thick template outline. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 7Slide your scrunchie onto your template design. Your Neon Scrunchie Gift is now ready for someone special! You could even add a handwritten note to the back of the cardboard.
