DIY Book Week Costume: Alpaca

Step 1Cut a paper plate in half. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Gather the two halves together, one on top of the other and then cut an additional 2cm off the straight edge. These will be the alpaca’s ears.
Step 2Place a second paper plate face down on the table and lightly sketch the shape of an alpaca face onto the raised surface. You can use our design as a guide or create your own shape. Before sketching the features, hold the plate up to your face and take note of where your eyes will be. Sketch the eyes over this area and then the nose and mouth below.
Step 3Once you are happy with your alpaca face, use scissors to cut out the design and then decorate the face and ear pieces. You could use markers, pencils or paint. Allow to dry if needed.
Step 4Use a sharp pencil to poke a hole through where your eyes will sit. You can then use your scissors to carefully widen the holes.
Step 5Glue the ears onto the face from behind and allow to dry. You may need to trim them before gluing if they cover the eye holes.
Step 6Use a sharp pencil to poke a hole on either side of the mask. Cut a piece of elastic and tie it through the holes, making sure it’s tight enough to hold the mask on your face.
Step 7Your Alpaca Mask is now ready to wear! You could finish this outfit by wearing clothes the same colour as your alpaca mask or even a big, fluffy jacket!
